Go Checkmate – Pawn Curriculum (Beginners)

1. Chess Foundations

3. Checkmate Patterns & Traps

  • One-move checkmates with different pieces

  • Defending against quick mates

  • Building awareness of threats

4. Opening Principles

  • Three phases of the game (Opening, Middle, Endgame)

  • Basic opening rules: development, center control, king safety

  • Castling importance

  • Punishing early mistakes

5. Middle Game Concepts

  • Activating all pieces (especially Queen & Rooks)

  • Creating threats and breaking open the center

  • Batteries (piece coordination)

  • Simplification and exchanges

  • Learning from classic games

6. Endgame Essentials

  • Pawn races and promotion battles

  • Helping or stopping pawn promotion

Go Checkmate – Knight Curriculum (Intermediate)

1. Advanced Tactics

  • Double Attack - (Knight, Queen, other pieces, even with checkmate).

  • Pins - (how to pin, defend, and exploit pinned pieces).

  • Skewers – Attacking stronger pieces to win weaker ones behind. Discovered Attacks & Double Checks

  • Capture + Material

  • Chase Away + Material

  • Luring Away + Material

  • Control Work

2. Checkmate Patterns - Students will master famous checkmates named after patterns or players, including:

  • Back Rank Mate

  • Smothered Mate

  • Anastasia’s Mate

  • Arabian Mate

  • Boden’s Mate

  • Epaulette Mate

  • Dovetail Mate

  • Opera Mate

3. Opening Knowledge
  • Playing with White: Ruy Lopuz, Giuoco Piano

  • Playing with Black: Italian Defense, Caro-Kann Defense, French Defense.

  • Famous Opening Traps:

  • Fried Liver Attack, Legal Trap, Petrov Copycat, Englund Gambit Learning Material Gains – Spotting how to win a Rook, Knight, Bishop, or Queen through traps and tactics.

4. Positional Play & Strategy
  • Neutralizing Opponent’s Pieces – Handling strong enemy pieces.

  • Why Did Opponent Move? – Always check for Checks, Captures, and Threats.

  • When to Check / Trade / Counterattack – Decision-making in the middlegame.

  • Positional Advantage – Understanding space, development, and activity.

5. Endgame Mastery
